Ask A Skin Doctor: Boxcar Scar Treatment
Dear Doctor
I had that a very big pimple last October 2013 and left me a big hole in my forehead.
I would just like to ask what is the best thing to do to make it look smooth again just like before. Thank you
Dear Patient
The big hole in your forehead is what is know as a boxcar scar.
Boxcar Scar Treatment
This type of scar can be treated at home by:
1. Skin needling
Skin needling is a procedure which involves running a Derma Roller or skin roller with tiny needles over the skin. It stimulates collagen production, improves the skin’s elasticity and gives the skin a smoother appearance. It also improves the penetration of skin care products.
Dermatologist treatment of the boxcar scar includes:
1. Punch Excision
This involves removing the scar and suturing the wound.
2. Punch Elevation
This involves removing the base of the scar and leaving the sides in place. The base is reattached to the sides at a higher level where it is level with the surface of the skin. It makes the scars less noticeable.
3. Ablative Lasers
Ablative lasers are used for shallow boxcar scars and usually combined with other methods like punch excision and subcision.
